Frosts and rainbows

Category: random chatter

All this obsession with blogging about the iPod has brought about a terrible bout of neglectfulness from my real blogging duties. I forget to mention enough just how magnificent this town is, in every way. The architecture, the history, the weather, everything.

From where I work, I have this brilliant view out across the Forth of Firth to Fife. It blew me away when I first saw it, but at this time of year when the sun tracks to the south, and the buildings are all lit up by sunshine even when it’s raining, makes for some pretty spectacular sights. I happened to have my camera in my bag when this happened one day:

I swear, at one point this rainbow continued quite distinctly infront of that building whose roof it’s landing on in the picture above. Crocks of gold galore, you just have to get into that courtyard… *sigh*

And then the other day, we had possibly the coldest day I’ve experienced here. Not as cold as China, but the houses here aren’t as heated, and my boots aren’t fur lined here, so it really FELT cold. There’d been a frost so heavy that it looked very much like snow. Take a look at the Princes Street gardens that morning:

I know, I’m supposed to hate the squirrels, I know they used to throw nuts at my mum, but I still got delight from watching them scamper around on the white ground – far from being camouflaged any more, they stuck out like a sore thumb which has been hit with a hammer, dipped in flourescent paint and dressed up in a lime green tutu. Very very cool. I totally love this city!

Yes, the squirrels threw acorns at me but I still thought they were cute. They were also covered in mites (think fleas) which they regularly transmitted to our cat. Not so cute.

I am so looking forward to frsosts again in Armidale. Judy gave me some red NZ possum-fur trimmed gloves that I need an excuse to wear.(New Zealand possums are as politically personna non grata as uk squirrels)

Don’t remember any squirrels being so bold as to throw acorns at Sara, but you can rest assured I always used to hurl airgun pellets at them at a suitable speed. Without much success though! Maybe Sara was attacked by them in London.

Glad you’re coping with the sub zero temps down there – it’s currently 32°C here, at 7pm. Planning on a quick trip to Melbourne in the next few weeks too.
